The Five Components of Reading Defined [Reading Rockets]

Phonological and Phonemic Awareness is defined as the ability to recognize and manipulate the spoken parts of words. Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words.

Phonics is defined as the relationship between sounds and their spellings. Phonics instruction teaches students sound-spelling relationships so that they can decode words.

Vocabulary is defined as the words we must understand to communicate effectively. Vocabulary in education refers to the body of words and their meanings that students must understand to comprehend text.

Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.

Reading Comprehension is defined as the understanding and interpretation of what is read. Comprehension involves a student's ability to decode what is read, make connections between what they read and their prior knowledge, and reflect on what they read.
